The purpose of NK News is threefold:
- To provide academics, journalists, bloggers, and others with a searchable archive of North Korean propaganda released through the KCNA, along with other features
- To allow the world an overarching view of the nature of the Kim Jong Il regime by letting the propaganda speak for itself
- To offer some satirical comic relief from an otherwise tragic and dangerous situation
This site is in no way associated with or endorses the views of the Korean Central News Agency, Korea News Service, or the government of the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea.
"Satire is a weapon you use against the powerful. You don't use satire against the weak."
- Molly Ivins
Also, this site aims its satirical lens solely at the regime of Kim Jong Il, and certainly not at the long-suffering people of North Korea, Korean culture, or Korea in general, North or South. Within the DPRK, even the regime regards only a third of its population as “core” (loyal), with the rest categorized as “wavering” or “hostile”. From just about any outsider’s account, parts of the country there are hell on earth. For those interested in further information, NK News contains links to sites documenting the regime’s crimes, as well as various charities through which to provide help.
The author sincerely hopes that the Korean peninsula will one day be unified as a democracy in the most peaceful and least traumatic way possible, that the regime’s crimes will be fully exposed to the world, and that its people will know a better day.
